How satellites protect us
Defense from Above
spacecraft and satellites have done in depth studying on asteroids, tracking their movement and patterns. Although still undergoing testing, NASA is developing technology that could possibly be used to prevent these objects from ever reaching the earth. This is known as the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), which successfully moved an asteroid in space for the first time in September 2022.
Weather satellites are capable of detecting space radiation, which can have detrimental effects on not only the satellites themselves, but also technology on earth. Warnings of this radiation gives people enough time to shut down anything necessary to prevent damage.
Weather Tracking
The first full-scale weather satellite, known as TIROS-1, was launched 50 years ago, on April 1, 1960A total of 10 TIROS satellites were launched into polar orbit, which means they orbit the globe from one pole to another. In 1965, 450 TIROS images were compiled together to provide the first global picture of the earth's weather. Ever since, weather satellites have been used to detect and track tropical storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and various other natural disasters. Alongside this, these satellites, combined with other technological advances, enable scientists to monitor long-term changes in the climate, including things like drought and sea-surface temperatures
